"There are analogies between the life of animals and the psychic life of human beings. Take the mole as an example: it lives underground, far from the light, and in order to move about it has to dig long tunnels in the earth, which are sometimes destroyed by the farmer’s plough. This dark and limited life undoubtedly suits it, because it is a mole and cannot imagine living otherwise. The life of the fish is freer than that of the mole: the space it moves in is vaster and lighter. But the life of the bird is even freer: all space belongs to it, and it sings and rejoices in the light of the sun. The mole (earth), the fish (water) and the bird (air) are symbolic here. Each corresponds to a level of consciousness that determines its destiny." Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov
